German Christmas Tree Ornaments

Decorating a tree with German Christmas ornaments is one of the most pleasing things you can do during the holiday season. The German holiday decorations come in all styles and sizes. They are often made from glass, pewter, wax or wood. Many depict traditional characters like Santa and the snowman, while others are crafted in religious themes and characters. There are hand crated German decorations to suit just about any decorating theme.

Mouth blown glass ornaments have been made by Germans since the middle of the 1800’s. Their holiday decorations quickly became popular with the German people, and were soon exported to England. Today, the lovely baubles are exported to all areas of the world. They have become a part of our time honored holiday season traditions.

christmas ornamentsGerman craftsmen have been making wax ornaments for an even longer period than the glass ones. The first wax decorations were sold at local markets for villagers to use to adorn their trees. Wax decorations are still being made in Germany today. They are also exported and sold world wide. Due to the fact that they melt under high temperatures, it is best to have them shipped during the cooler months of the year.

Perhaps the most famous of all German Christmas ornaments are the hand crafted wooden ones. German craftsmen have been carving figurines from wood for centuries. Other than nuts and cookies, wooden carved decorations were probably the first type of ornament used by the Germans to decorate their Christmas trees. Even now, after the art of carving has been handed down for generations, wooden decorations from Germany are still extremely popular and sold all over the world.

The craft of making pewter baubles and decorations dates back to more than 200 years ago in Germany. Each pewter piece is hand crafted, polished and hand painted. Pewter decorations come in small sizes, special for use as tree adornments, as well as large decorative scenes to use as window hangings during the holiday season.

We can thank Germany for their long history of producing hand crafted Christmas decorations, and also for the art and tradition of trimming Christmas trees. They were also the first people to decorate trees at Christmastime, a delightful tradition that has been adopted by millions of families all 1000 over the world. To many of us, it just wouldn’t be Christmas without a beautiful tree decorated brightly with glittering ornaments.
